The gorgeous Hamsterley Forest is only 15 minutes away. The Forest has 2,000 hectares and a very nice teashop which is famous for its cakes! You also pass The Cross Keys Pub, a dog-friendly pub, on your way into the Forest. www.forestry.gov.uk/hamsterleyforest
High Force and Low Force Waterfall (40 mins away with a pretty woodland walk). Low Force is an easy walk and great for dogs to cool off in. www.walkingbritain.co.uk

Sporting Activities

Horse riding – there are a number of riding stables in the surrounding areas. The nearest is literally just up the hill from us (you drive past it on your way to us):

How about a day at the seaside?

There are 10 beaches which are all less than 30 miles away, the nearest (and one of the nicest) being Seaton Carew.


There are 7 golf courses within easy reach of us.
The nearest is Bishop Auckland Golf Club


Less than 10 minutes away, Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre boasts an Olympic size swimming pool, huge air conditioned gym (over 2 floors), sauna and steam room, fitness classes etc. It’s a public facility so very affordable prices. http://www.durham.gov.uk/pages/

We are only yards from Escomb Saxon Church, the oldest complete Saxon Church in the UK
(Grade 1 listed).

Witton Castle Trout Lakes are set in the grounds of Witton Castle, only a 10 minute drive from us. http://www.bishopaucklandanddistrict

The local farmer also allows fishing in the lakes next to us (£5 per day, pay on the day).​ Numerous Fly and Coarse fishing reservoirs are located within 40 mins drive.
